Made in the UK" mattresses: how to check the label, not the brand
Plenty of mattress brands sound British, and some of them are. The trouble is that "British brand", "designed in the UK" and "made in the UK" are three different claims, and the marketing tends to blur them. If where it is made matters to you, here is how to check.
Why it matters, practically
Not for the flag. A UK-made mattress usually means: built to UK fire regulations with treated foams or a woven barrier rather than a fibreglass sock; a factory you can ask questions of; made to order and delivered flat as an option; heavier springs, steel edges and natural fillings that cannot be rolled into a box; and a guarantee backed by a company that is here. None of that is guaranteed by the label, but it is far more likely.
The three claims
| Claim | What it means | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Made in the UK / Made in Britain | The mattress was manufactured here | The materials are British (foam and springs are often imported) |
| Designed in the UK | The company is here; the mattress is made somewhere else, usually in Europe or China | Anything about manufacture |
| British brand / British company | The company is registered here | Anything about where the product is made |
A brand can be all three of the second and third and none of the first.
Where to look
- The permanent label sewn to the mattress. It must state the manufacturer or an identifying code and normally states the country of manufacture. This is the only place the claim is regulated.
- The specific product page, not the About page. A brand may make its natural or premium range in the UK and its rolled range abroad, and the About page will talk about the Yorkshire heritage while the product you are buying arrives from a container.
- The delivery method. A mattress that arrives rolled in a box can be UK-made, but a mattress with a steel edge, natural fillings or a pillow-top delivered flat almost certainly is, because those cannot be shipped rolled.
- The price. A double under £200, rolled, is very unlikely to be made here.
The marks
- NBF Approved: the National Bed Federation audits member manufacturers for compliance with fire, trade descriptions and safety rules. It is a mark of an audited UK or Irish maker, not of quality per se, but it is a real check.
- Made in Britain: the campaign mark; members sign up to a manufacturing-in-Britain definition. Useful, voluntary.
- Which? Best Buy, Good Housekeeping and so on: quality and review marks, nothing to do with origin.
The questions that settle it
Ask, in writing: "In which country, and if possible which factory, is this specific mattress made? And what is the fire barrier made of?" A UK maker answers both in a line. A reseller will send you to the About page.
The Yorkshire point
Most UK mattress manufacturing sits in a few square miles of West Yorkshire, around Dewsbury and Batley, where the bedding trade grew out of the wool industry. A great many "own brand" and retailer mattresses are made there by factories whose names you never see. If a brand says Yorkshire, ask which factory; if it can tell you, that is a good sign. See why so many British mattresses are made in Yorkshire.
How we do it
Every Chapter mattress is made to order in the Dewsbury area of West Yorkshire; it says so on the label with the build date, and the About page says which town rather than which county. We say "made in Yorkshire" and not "British materials", because the wool is British and the foams and springs may not be.
The short version
- "Made in" is the only regulated claim; "designed in" and "British brand" are not.
- Check the permanent label and the specific product page, not the brand story.
- Flat delivery, steel edges and natural fillings are strong signs of UK manufacture.
- Ask which country and which factory. A maker can tell you.
What BS 7177 on a mattress label means, and what "low hazard" is
The fire-safety standard every UK mattress has to meet, in plain words: the four hazard levels, which one your bedroom needs, what the tests involve, and how makers pass it with and without fibreglass.
What is CMHR foam? The support foam in UK mattresses, explained
CMHR appears on British spec sheets and almost nowhere else. What the letters mean, what the foam does under the comfort layer, what densities are good, and how it differs from memory foam and reflex foam.
How deep should a mattress be? 20, 25, 30 cm and what the depth is made of
Depth is quoted everywhere and explains almost nothing on its own. What a good 22 cm mattress has that a bad 30 cm one does not, the depth each type of bed needs, and the sheets problem nobody mentions.
