The Uni Student
The first bed that's actually yours.
Halls beds are built to survive, not to be slept on. The Uni Student is the fix: a proper pocket sprung mattress with a memory foam top, at a price that makes sense for three years and a first flat after that.
It is the same build we sell as The Empty Nester for the spare room, so nothing about it is a compromise. It is just sold in the sizes that fit a student room.
Who this chapter is for
- Going into halls or a first shared house and the bed that came with it is doing your back no favours.
- Parents who want one purchase that lasts the whole degree and the first flat after it.
- Anyone who needs a decent single or small double without paying for layers they will not notice yet.
| Single 3ft · 90 × 190 cm | £189 |
| Small double 4ft · 120 × 190 cm | £299 |

What it feels like, and who it suits.
No showroom, so we tell you everything a showroom would. If the feel is wrong after 30 nights, we swap it.
This chapter is 7 out of 10 on our scale, where 10 is a board. The dashed band, 6 to 7.5, is where most people sleep best.

Up to about 16 stone per person. Heavier than that: The Bad Back Years in Firm tension.
Any sprung or platform-top divan, or a slatted frame with slats no more than 7 cm apart. Not for adjustable beds.
Standard fitted sheets fit (22 cm).
Pocket springs move independently, so you feel little of your partner turning. For very restless partners, look at The New Parent.
Rotate head to toe every three months in the first year, then twice a year. Use a breathable protector. Never fold it. It is one-sided: do not flip it.
Roughly 25 to 30 kg in a double. Our two-person team carries it in; you never lift it.
Every layer, by density.
This is the spec sheet the factory works to. If a layer is not listed here, it is not in the mattress. The cutaway is drawn from the spec, to scale, and the same scale is used for every chapter.
Read top (sleep surface) to bottom (base). Heights are to scale. Spring counts are stated for a 5ft king, the industry convention. Foam densities are the figures we specify to the factory in writing for every layer.
What happens when you order.
1. We make it
Your Uni Student is made to order in Yorkshire in 10–14 days, with the build date on the label.
2. Two people deliver it
Flat, never rolled. Carried to the room you choose, unwrapped, placed on the base, packaging taken away. Old mattress collected if you asked.
3. 30 nights, then 10 years
If the feel is wrong after 30 nights we swap it within the range, in one visit. After that, the 10-year guarantee covers the build. Full terms.
The Uni Student, answered.
Will it fit a standard halls bed frame?
Yes. UK halls beds are a standard 3ft single (90 × 190 cm) and this is made to that size. If your halls bed is a 4ft small double, we make that too. Check the frame before you order because a few older universities use 2ft 6 beds.
Can it be delivered to halls?
Yes, as long as reception or the accommodation office will accept a two-person delivery. We deliver it flat and unwrapped to the room where we can, and we take the packaging away. Tell us the move-in date and we will deliver the working day before.
Is it too firm?
It is medium-firm, roughly a 7 out of 10, with 3 cm of memory foam on top. If you want something softer and you are buying a double or larger, look at The Single Life, which is a medium with a thicker comfort layer.
What happens to it after uni?
It carries on. It has a 10-year guarantee, and most students take it to their first flat. When you eventually want a bigger bed, that is The Single Life, and we will tell you when it is time.

First flat: the bed and mattress checklist, in the order to buy things
Moving into a first flat means buying a bed with no idea what matters. What to spend and what to skip, frame or divan, the mattress that lasts into the next flat, and the things to sort before the van arrives.
What size is a halls bed? UK student accommodation bed sizes explained
Most halls beds are 3ft singles, newer blocks are 4ft small doubles, and a few are 2ft 6. How to find out before you buy bedding or a topper, what each size needs, and the questions to ask the accommodation office.
Which mattress topper for a halls bed: the one purchase that fixes most of it
A halls mattress is firm, warm and wipe-clean. For most students a topper is the right fix, not a mattress. Which kind, what to spend, the protector everyone forgets, and when a topper is not enough.
The student mattress guide: halls, first flats, and what is actually worth spending
Halls beds are built to survive, not to sleep on. Whether to buy a topper or a mattress, what size halls beds really are, what a decent single costs, and how to get it delivered on move-in day.
