Why a new mattress is the first thing to buy after a breakup

Updated 22 September 20264 min readBy the Chapter team, Yorkshire

There is a moment, a few weeks after someone moves out, when you notice you are still sleeping on your side of the bed. The other side is made, cold and untouched. The mattress has a shape in it that is not yours. Everybody who has been through it knows this moment, and almost nobody talks about the practical fix, which is that you are allowed to buy a new bed.

This is a guide to doing that. It is not a guide to feelings, except to say that the mattress is a real and reasonable thing to deal with, and dealing with it helps.

Why the bed, and why first

Of everything in a shared home, the bed is the most personal and the hardest to make neutral. Sofas get recovered by cushions. Kitchens are just kitchens. The bed has a history, a side, and a body impression that is not yours, and you spend eight hours a night in it. A new mattress is not a symbol. It is a different surface, with your shape in it and nobody else's.

There is also a plain physical reason. A shared mattress has been chosen for two people, usually as a compromise, and has worn to two people. If it was Firm because they liked Firm, or soft because they did, it was never yours. This is the first mattress in years you get to choose on your own terms.

Choosing for yourself

Three questions, and the answers are probably different from last time.

What do you actually like? If you spent five years on a Firm and never liked it, this is the moment for a Medium. If you always wanted a firmer bed and were outvoted, go Firm. On a made-to-order mattress the tension is free, so there is no cost to choosing.

What size? People starting again tend to buy a double or a king, not a single. Partly because the room is already the size it is, partly because a king with one person in it is a particular kind of luxury. Sleep in the middle. All of it is yours.

What has changed about you? People who separate in their forties and fifties are often buying the first mattress since their back started joining in, or since they started sleeping hot. The right chapter may not be the everyday one. If your back has opinions, look at The Bad Back Years; if you wake up hot, The Hot Flush.

What to do with the old one

Get rid of it, and do not do it yourself. Most councils will collect a mattress for a fee, and most makers who deliver flat will take the old one away on the same visit for a small charge, which is the least effort option and means you never have to carry it downstairs. It goes to a recycler who strips the steel and the foam. It is not resold.

If your ex wants it, that is between you. If neither of you does, it goes.

A word on bereavement

Some people arrive at this page after a death, not a separation. The practical steps are the same and the timing is entirely yours; there is no rule that says the bed has to change, or has to stay. If you do decide to replace it, tell the delivery team that you would like the old mattress taken quietly, and any decent company will do exactly that, without comment.

The practical list

  1. Measure the frame. Check the base for broken slats while you are at it; it has probably not been looked at in years.
  2. Decide the tension for yourself: Medium unless you know otherwise.
  3. Decide the size. Bigger than you think.
  4. Order with old-mattress collection.
  5. Buy new bedding at the same time. Not because of the symbolism, though that too, but because the old set was chosen for two people and you now get to choose the weight of the duvet.

How we built ours

The Rebound is our everyday mattress, a medium feel with gel memory foam over three-zone pocket springs, in double, king and super king, with a terracotta edge and your name on the label. It comes in Medium or Firm tension at no charge, we collect the old one when we deliver, and the team will not make a thing of it. It is the same build as The Single Life, because that is where a lot of people find themselves again.

The short version

  • The bed is the last thing in the flat that remembers. Replacing it is practical, not dramatic.
  • Choose the tension and the size for yourself, probably for the first time in years.
  • Have the old one collected on delivery. You do not have to carry it.
  • Consider whether you are in a different chapter now than you were last time you bought a mattress.
